Our Privacy Commitment

Your writing stays yours. Scrollwright is built on three core privacy principles:

  • No content storage: Your manuscripts, notes, and outlines are never transmitted to or stored on Scrollwright servers
  • No AI training: Your writing is never used to train AI models or machine learning systems
  • Minimal data collection: We only collect what's strictly necessary to provide the service

1. Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of information:

Account Information

If you use cloud features, we collect your email address and GitHub user ID for authentication purposes. This information is used solely to identify your account and provide cloud services.

License Validation Data

To validate your license, we collect: a unique device fingerprint (generated locally, not personally identifiable), activation timestamps, and license key status. This data is used only to enforce license terms (device limits, subscription status).

Sync Metadata

If you enable cloud sync, we process sync operation metadata including file names, modification timestamps, and sync status. File contents are never transmitted to Scrollwright servers — sync operates directly between your device and your personal GitHub account.

2. Information We Do NOT Collect

We explicitly do not collect:

  • Your writing content: Manuscripts, notes, outlines, and any text you create in Scrollwright
  • Usage analytics: We do not track which features you use, how long you write, or your editing patterns
  • Behavioral data: We do not use cookies for tracking or analytics on the desktop app
  • Location data: We do not collect your geographic location

3. How We Use Your Information

We use collected information for these specific purposes:

  • Provide services: Authenticate your account, validate your license, enable cloud sync
  • Process payments: Handle purchases and subscriptions through our payment processor (Stripe)
  • Communicate: Send transactional emails (purchase receipts, license activation)
  • Prevent abuse: Detect and prevent license fraud or unauthorized access

4. AI and Machine Learning

Your writing is never used to train AI models. Scrollwright's grammar and spellcheck features run entirely offline on your device using pre-trained language models. Future AI features (Premium tier) will operate on explicit user request only, process content locally where possible, and never persist or train on your writing.

5. Data Sharing

We share your information only with:

  • Payment processor (Stripe): To process purchases and manage subscriptions
  • Cloud sync (GitHub): Only if you choose to enable sync — your content goes to your GitHub account, not ours
  • License server (Keygen): To validate licenses and manage device activations

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with advertisers, data brokers, or other third parties for marketing purposes.

6. Data Retention

Account information is retained while your account is active. License validation data is retained for the duration of your license. You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by contacting support.

7. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:

  • Access: Request a copy of personal data we hold about you
  • Correction: Request correction of inaccurate personal data
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your personal data
  • Portability: Request your data in a machine-readable format
  • Objection: Object to processing of your personal data

8. Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal data, including encryption in transit (TLS), secure authentication, and access controls. However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure.

9. Children's Privacy

Scrollwright is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected such information, please contact us.

10. International Data Transfers

Our servers are located in the United States. If you are accessing the Service from outside the US, your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the US. By using the Service, you consent to this transfer.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance.
