Terms of Service

1. Agreement to Terms

By accessing or using Scrollwright ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use the Service.

2. Description of Service

Scrollwright is an offline-first writing application for long-form projects including novels, screenplays, and non-fiction. The Service includes a desktop application and optional cloud features (sync, web companion) available through subscription.

3. User Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you are under 18, you represent that you have your parent or guardian's permission to use the Service.

4. License Grant

Subject to these Terms, Scrollwright grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to:

• Download and install the desktop application on devices you own or control
• Use the Service for personal or commercial writing projects
• Access cloud features if you have an active subscription

You may not: reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the software; redistribute or sublicense the software; use the software to develop competing products.

5. Your Content

You retain all rights to content you create using Scrollwright. We do not claim ownership of your manuscripts, notes, or other creative works. Your content remains on your local device unless you choose to enable cloud sync, in which case it is stored in your personal GitHub account.

6. Payment Terms

Desktop License: A one-time payment grants you a perpetual license to use the desktop application. This license is valid for the major version purchased and includes free minor updates.

Cloud Subscription: Cloud features (sync, web companion, version snapshots) require an annual subscription. Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled.

Refunds: Desktop licenses are eligible for a full refund within 30 days of purchase if you are not satisfied. Subscription refunds are prorated based on unused time.

7. Device Limits

Each license may be activated on up to 5 devices. If you exceed this limit, the oldest activation will be automatically deactivated. You may manually deactivate devices at any time.

8. Prohibited Uses

You agree not to:

• Use the Service for any illegal purpose
• Attempt to circumvent license validation or copy protection
• Share your license key with others outside your household
• Use automated systems to access the Service without permission

9. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. SCROLLWRIGHT DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR FREE OF HARMFUL COMPONENTS.

10. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, SCROLLWRIGHT SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS OR REVENUES, WHETHER INCURRED DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY.

11. Termination

We may terminate or suspend your access to the Service at any time for violation of these Terms. Upon termination, your license to use the software ends, but you retain access to any content stored locally on your devices.

12. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the new Terms on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.
